Applications for membership are invited from established dog training instructors, who have successfully trained and instructed a significant range of dog breeds and their owners, over a considerable number of years. Applications will be considered upon completion of an in-depth application form, a detailed CV and verification of two references. Referees should know the applicant on a personal level.
Successful applicants will have completed the training application form, be invited for interview by the Board of Managers, and undergo an assessed observation of their instructing and training skills by two full members. Applicants need to supply a copy of their Professional Indemnity Insurance with their training application form.
Dog training instructor members are entitled to use “TCBTS Approved Dog Training Instructor” after their name. “TCBTS” is personal to them, must only be linked directly with the member’s name, and cannot be used by any other organisation of which TCBTS member is a part.
The annual fee for full TCBTS Dog Training Instructor Membership is £60.
Dog training instructor membership is open to those who teach classes and/or one to ones. Those applicants running classes should be able to demonstrate their ability to organise and teach mixed ability classes and/or classes at varying levels of ability. They should also be able to show their ability to tailor training to the needs and abilities of each client and dog, have a course syllabus/teaching plans and have relevant course documentation for their students. Class structure, appropriate class props, tools and the physical layout will be assessed in situ.
Successful applicants should have experience in areas such as rehabilitation on a one to one basis and/or rescue. They should provide the assessors with all documents or handouts that are given out to clients. Communication skills and the ability to train exercise sequences clearly and effectively, problem solving techniques, feedback and the ability to answer questions will also be assessed.
