Student membership

How student membership works
Candidates may be accepted for student membership after they have enrolled on an approved academic course in a canine related subject, at Level 2 or above.
Student membership is available to those working toward ATI assessment and for candidates who want to progress to assessment for the CAB role but who do not yet meet all the CAB Knowledge and Understanding criteria, necessary to go forward for assessment of CAB performance criteria.
To progress to Provisional CAB membership, student candidates will either need to evidence they have passed an ABTC recognised L6 qualification, or successfully completed the ABTC Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning Process (APEL). TCBTS offer support for APEL Candidates, by way of Zoom sessions and a Facebook support group. For more information about APEL, please see the FAQs.

APEL is a great opportunity for those seeking assessment for the role of Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CAB) and who do not hold an ABTC recognised level 6 degree.
APEL (accreditation of prior experience and/ or learning) allows candidates to draw on transferable skills, knowledge accrued through practice, self-learning, and courses and study, not yet accredited by ABTC, to show you have the underpinning knowledge necessary for the CAB role. Using the APEL process, you can now collate and present evidence to show how you meet all the knowledge and understanding criteria, as outlined in the CAB standard here.
Read about the APEL process and requirements here.
APEL submissions are assessed centrally by specially trained ABTC Assessors, however application for APEL should be made through TCBTS, who will handle your application and submission.
Prospective candidates are welcome to contact us for a chat about the APEL process, to see if the route is the right one for you at this point in your career. -
The annual fee for student membership is £75.
